MARITIME INNOVATORS has brought the Skills4Sea online learning and assessment platform to a stage where maritime institutions can begin controlled piloting. The platform integrates five practical scenario modules and is available for learners and educators to explore free of charge, with coordinated access and support.
For our team, the work connects maritime operational experience with software development and educational design. A useful digital learning tool needs realistic situations, clear tasks, a coherent learning sequence and evidence that an instructor can review. That has shaped our contribution to Work Package 3.
Turning maritime expertise into an online learning experience
MARITIME INNOVATORS has developed the technical platform and implemented the course structure, learner navigation, saved responses and progress, content editing and lecturer-review workflows.
The five modules address watchkeeping and handover; technical failure and emergency coordination; speaking up and operational conflict; safety pressure and reporting; and the challenges of automation and human oversight. Together, they give learners opportunities to practise the reasoning and communication required in demanding maritime situations.
The platform supports a learning sequence that includes knowledge checks, case-based activities, practical scenario responses, final tests and reflection. Institutions can use the learning evidence to support instructor feedback and identify areas for further practice.
An invitation to maritime institutions and professionals
The next step is to test the platform in real training settings. The Skills4Sea WP3 pilot plans to engage with its target group, including instructors, across three to four maritime education and training institutions.
We welcome interest from maritime universities, academies, vocational colleges, specialist training centres, educators and active seafarers. Shipping companies and maritime training departments can also contact us about involving relevant learners or contributing operational feedback.
Institutions will coordinate a learner group and facilitator, use the reviewed modules and return feedback on clarity, realism, navigation and assessment. Learner and instructor experience will help the partnership refine the platform and its content. Pilot access is free of charge.
As Skills4Sea approaches its first anniversary in November 2026, our priority is to support meaningful use of the resources with learners, educators and industry.
